All Veterans and Military families are invited to attend this free event which will provide a free dinner, a box of groceries, winter gear for Military kids and a resource fair.

PRESS RELEASE: Support Siouxland Soldiers Hosts Care-package Event to Support 200 Deployed Service Members
[Sioux City, Iowa] – With several groups of deployed Service Members from the Siouxland area, Support Siouxland Soldiers will be packing and sending up to 200 care-packages over the next several months. Support Siouxland Soldiers is asking for the Community’s support in collecting items to be included in the care-packages. Local businesses, churches, organizations and families are encouraged to collect items such as protein bars, tuna pouches, trail mix, baby wipes, crossword puzzles and more. Items may be dropped off at Support Siouxland Soldiers on Wednesday, July 27th between 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Support Siouxland Soldiers is located at 1551 Indian Hills Dr. Suite 102. Rally for our Troops: Large Care-Pack Event!
With over 180 recently deployed Troops, Support Siouxland Soldiers is planning one of our largest care-pack events to date. While the event details are still in the planning stages, we need your help in collecting snacks and hygiene items to go into the packages. Download the attached flyer with a list of the most requested items that you can share with your employer, church, social group, family or friends! We want to see Siouxland Rally Up for our Troops! Take photos of what you’ve collected and share on our Facebook page at Support Siouxland Soldiers. In 2010 Support Siouxland Soldiers created a Financial Emergency Grant Fund and a Housing Assistance Fund to help our Siouxland Veterans who need us the most.
The Financial Emergency fund is a one-time emergency grant up to $300 that can be used for:
- Travel expenses for a wounded Veteran or visiting spouse
- Emergency Home Repair
- Emergency Vehicle Repair
- Medical Emergency expenses

The Housing Assistance Fund is a one-time grant to help with rent, mortgage or utility payments. This fund has been placed in the care of the Community Action Agency of Siouxland. They are the fiscal agent for Support Siouxland Soldiers. In addition to managing our bookkeeping and tax reporting they assist us in processing applications for veterans that are homeless or on the brink of becoming homeless. Below are a list of additional services and resources provided by the Community Action Agency of Siouxland:
Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA)
TBRA is a subsidized rental assistance program that provides assistance to individual households to help them afford the housing costs of market-rate units. TBRA programs help individual households, rather than subsidizing particular rental projects. Clients are able to participate in the program for 1 year unless they decide to accept other subsidized housing assistance prior to the year ending—if the household no longer wishes to rent a particular unit, the household may take its TBRA and move to another rental property, but there are certain rules and guidelines that apply. The level of subsidy is based upon the income of the household. Generally the monthly rental assistance payment is approximately 30 percent of the monthly adjusted family income. The Tenant is responsible for paying the Landlord any portion of the rent that is not covered by the TBRA rental assistance payment.
Sponsored by MidAmerican Energy, we administer the ICARE program. MidAmerican customers make a donation to help others pay a portion of their heating bills; 25% of the donation is matched by MidAmerican. We distribute the contributions to those in need of help with their energy bill.
Our Community Services Department is our first point of contact for people who come to us for help. The Community Action Agency of Siouxland began administering the General Assistance program for the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors in August 2003. Households receiving help from the General Assistance program must be at or below 100% of Federal Poverty guidelines. The program can assist families with a portion of heating or water utilities, burials, medical expenses, rent or mortgage payments, bus tokens, cab fare or a one way bus ticket.
Angel Cars is an initiative to refurbish and distribute donated autos for the sole purpose of liberating and empowering single parents that are lacking accessible transportation by giving them ownership of their own vehicles.
Employees of the Community Action Agency of Siouxland contribute to the WeCare program that allows us to help families with emergencies. We often get requests for assistance that the programs we administer aren’t designed to assist with. The WeCare program allows us to help someone that needs just a little extra help.
Support Siouxland Soldiers
We are the fiscal agent for Support Siouxland Soldiers. We assist the organization in processing applications for veterans that are homeless or on the brink of becoming homeless by providing assistance with rent, mortgage and utility payments.
The Des Moines Register operates the Embrace Iowa campaign. The paper publishes a series of articles that feature low-income families. Donations are distributed to the 18 Community Action Agencies in Iowa.
Holiday gifts & special projects
Through generous donations from churches, businesses, schools and individuals the Community Action Agency is able to provide clients with a merrier Christmas. Children are provided with toys while some families receive all the food needed to provide a wonderful Christmas or Thanksgiving meal.
Garden of Love (garden seeds)
Interfaith Resources collects and donates packages of garden seeds to our agency each spring. These seeds are made available to anyone that would like them to plant their own flower and vegetable gardens.
Participate in Up From the Earth
Up from the Earth is a voluntary system for connecting excess produce from home gardens to people in need. The program encourages home gardeners to “grow an extra row” and facilitates the gathering and distribution of excess fruits and veggies to those in need through existing food pantries. The Community Action Agency’s George J. Williams Memorial Food Bank is one of the food pantries that receives food from the Up From The Earth program.
Federal money for the Energy Crisis Intervention Program allows us to assist people at or below 150 percent of poverty. We can help by providing furnace repairs or replacements, by weatherizing homes or other necessary energy related items.

[Sioux City, IA] – Softball for Armed Services Tournament
Floyd Softball will host the 2nd Annual Softball for Armed Services Tournament Saturday, June 11 and Sunday June 12 at Chautauqua Park fields in Sioux City, IA. Teams from across the Midwest are invited to compete with 100% of the tournament proceeds being donated to Support Siouxland Soldiers, a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance, free groceries and care-packages to our Siouxland Veterans, deployed Troops and Military families.
Saturday evening will include a special ceremony to honor our Siouxland Veterans with great food, music, raffles, prizes, kids carnival, bouncy houses, IZZON Photo Booth and more. The grill and concessions will also be available all weekend with specials and Military discounts.

The first annual Cardinal Honor Run, a 10k, 5k and 1 mile Fun Run/Walk, will take place during Cardinal Days on Saturday, June 11, 2016. This fundraising event, sponsored by Siouxland Federal Credit Union and Cardinal Days, will kick-off at Scenic Park, Riverview Dr. in South Sioux City, NE at 8:00 a.m. and will cross over the Missouri River on the Veterans Memorial Bridge and back. Walkers will be given the option to walk an alternative route on the bike path towards the Siouxland Freedom Park.
The registration fee to participate is $28 and includes an official Cardinal Honor Run t-shirt, fruit and water. Kids 13 and younger are free admission. Individuals and teams are encouraged to register early at www.CardinalHonorRun.com Registrations will also be accepted at all Siouxland Federal Credit Unions or event-day registrations will be accepted for $39 just prior to the event at 7:00 – 7:45 a.m. at the Scenic Park in South Sioux City.
The first wave of participants running the 10k will take off at 8:00 a.m.; the second wave for 5k runners will begin at 8:15 a.m. and the 1 mile runners/walkers will begin at 8:30 a.m. Packet pick-up will be available on Friday, June 10, 2016 from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Siouxland Federal Credit Union, 3000 Plaza Dr. in South Sioux City, NE or Saturday, June 11 from 7:00 – 7:45 a.m.
