The New Year marks the beginning of a new calendar year and many make plans to set new goals and resolutions. As Support Siouxland Soldiers enters it’s sixth year of service to the Siouxland Veterans and Military families we reflect on past accomplishments and new goals. Since 2007 we have sent over 4,000 care-packages all over the world to our deployed Troops; provided financial emergency grants to injured Veterans; hosted Military family events and provided Christmas presents to hundreds of military children.
As the majority of our Service Members returned home from their long deployments over the last few years, we wondered how we could have a major impact on ALL of Siouxland’s Veterans right here on the home-front. And so 2012 marked the beginning of our new “Food For Veterans” project. Since July we have distributed over 10,000 lbs. of food and discovered that this initiative is making a huge difference in the lives of our local Heroes. Our goal for the New Year is to sustain this project throughout 2013. We have scheduled three new food distributions dates that will take place on the first Thursday of the month at the Support Siouxland Soldiers Food Pantry, 514 Nebraska St. from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Thursday, February 7

With the New Year now here, we are asking all of our friends to make a New Year’s resolution to thank a Veteran for their service. Serving our Country is a huge undertaking for not just the Veteran, but their family, friends and our entire community. It is our responsibility to thank and support them when they come home. If you’ve ever wanted to meet new friends and take part in an event where you could shake the hand of someone who served, this is for you! We are looking for volunteers to help box up and distribute the food. Then we work in teams to take the food out to the Veterans vehicle and thank them for their service. If you are interested in volunteering at one of our “Food For Veterans” events, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
– From your friends at Support Siouxland Soldiers, Thank you for supporting our Siouxland Veterans and Military families and Happy New Year!
Tax deductible donations can also be made at any Security National Bank location or send your gift to Support Siouxland Soldiers, PO Box 5122, Sioux City, IA 51102 EIN# 26-0456700

By Staci DaSilva
With the holiday season upon us, many folks are looking forward to spending time with family. But for those serving overseas in the military, that’s a luxury they don’t get.
So Siouxlanders spent time today reaching out to our heroes.
Local non-profit Support Siouxland Soldiers hosted a “Cards For Our Troops” event Tuesday afternoon at the Southern Hills Mall.
Children and adults alike wrote cards and special messages for Siouxland soldiers overseas
And one veteran says it’s packages like these that make the holidays so much better for deployed soldiers.
Bob Prato of Sioux City said, “It’s a blessing. It’s a God send. It’s something that sometimes families can’t afford to send packages but when you get all these little goodies with the cards, it makes you feel like you’re partially the way home.”
Support Siouxland Soldiers has sent over 4,000 care packages since it was created back in 2007.
They’ll be sending the cards with care packages on Thursday.

Thank you to the Sioux City Lowe’s store for becoming the Founding Sponsor of the new Support Siouxland Soldiers’ “Food for Veterans” food pantry! The team at Lowe’s proudly supports our Siouxland Troops and wanted to get involved in giving back to those who have served. On Friday, October 26th, a Lowe’s crew filled their truck with appliances, shelving and supplies and presented us with everything we needed to get our new food pantry up and running! The employees built enough shelving to store thousands of pounds worth of food and donated a brand new double door Samsung fridge and upright deep freezer! But that wasn’t all, Lowe’s also donated a $3,500 patio door to be auctioned off at the upcoming Two Day Rock Concert Series on Nov. 30 – Dec. 1st at Chesterfields!
We cannot thank Lowe’s enough for their generous donations and providing us the tools to feed our Veterans and Military families! The Lowe’s employees were excited to give these gifts just in time for the “Holidays for our Heroes” campaign! This campaign includes donations from many local businesses who are donating food and toys to our Military families for the holidays! More details will be unveiled as we get closer to December.
Support Siouxland Soldiers will be opening the new food pantry for the Veterans and Military families on Friday, Dec. 21st with a give away of HyVee gift cards, free groceries and toys right before Christmas! Thank you, Lowe’s and your awesome employees, for your significant donation to our Siouxland Troops! Your gifts will keep on giving for years to come!
