Support Siouxland Soldiers was founded by Sarah Petersen, a military wife, in Sioux City, IA at the beginning of her husband’s first tour to Iraq in 2007. This was the largest deployment of Iowa Troops since WWII. “We were new to the area and I wanted to meet other families who were going through the deployment as well as support our service members.” Sarah asked her bosses, Dave Holub and Joe Twidwell, from Security National Bank to help her start a care-package program. The Bank jumped on board and they started a community-wide initiative to collect snacks and items for the care-packages and immediately began sending the packages overseas.

The large deployment lasted one year and as the Troops returned home, Support Siouxland Soldiers began to widen their scope of services. They formed partnerships with many of the local agencies and began hosting large support events called “Honoring All Who Served” events. These events serve as a one-stop-shop for Veterans and Military families to build a support network; receive a hot meal, a box of groceries, haircuts and additional resources. Each year these events serve over 2500 Veterans and family members and requires over 100 Volunteers and 4,000 volunteer hours. Sarah’s husband was then again deployed to Afghanistan for over a year in 2010 right after the birth of their daughter. “The second deployment was challenging in a different way. Raising our daughter without him made it even more important to connect with other families. Small things like mowing the yard and snow removal were proving to be very difficult. The nature of the deployment was different from the first and even after he returned, life was a challenge. No service member or military family should have to navigate deployment on their own.” The mission of Support Siouxland Soldiers is to serve all Siouxland Veterans and Military families. Before, during and long after the deployments are over, we will be here.
