Since 2007, Support Siouxland Soldiers has shipped out over 4,000 care packages to our brave soldiers deployed overseas. And now the group is turning its attention toward those who are now home. With combat beginning to wind down in Iraq and Afghanistan, Support Siouxland Soldiers wants to make sure the soldiers returning home receive as much aid as those still deployed.

Support Siouxland Soldiers has offered tons of support to the active military and veterans alike…literally! Over 12,000 pounds of food have been distributed by the organization in just the last 6 months.

The focus in the past has been on sending care packages to soldiers stationed overseas. And while the care package program isn’t ending, Zack Davis, the Support Siouxland Soldiers Development Director, says it’s time to turn more attention to those who have returned back home. “Many of the soldiers are home at this point. And so the last 15 months have been this transition period to focus on helping veterans and military families at home.”

This includes food drives, but Support Siouxland Soldiers is also looking to provide veterans with other services such as helping to find employment. “Whether it’s education opportunities available or job opportunities available, it’s getting them in touch with the right people.”

Now if you wish to help, you’ll have an opportunity very soon. On Thursday, the organization is holding a Food For Veterans event. Between 5 and 7 PM on Thursday night, you can drop off your donations at the Support Siouxland Soldiers office, that’s at 514 Nebraska Street in Sioux City.
